"Dusk Falls Over Downtown Hsinchu" (right)
buildings seen from above
unframed
watercolour and graphite
shown approx actually size
While Ivan and I were at the Hanlin Tearoom on the
8th floor of the Mega Shopping Centre I did a drawing
of some buildings below us. From that drawing came
this miniature.
Hsinchu is not known in Taiwan as a beautiful city. Taiwanese
are somewhat surprised when I say that I like it here. Yes, it is
dirty and stained with soot from unseen factories...but, I have
come to appreciate the chaos here. The buildings are placed
so randomly and not in a grid pattern. Oh, I am relieved not to
be living in a grid pattern! I hurts my head when everything is
at right angles to each other.

Our window looked over this view of buildings
with the cranes for loading the ships in the
background.

"View From the Love Motel Window" (left)
buildings done in yellow, green, and orange
unframed
watercolour and graphite
shown approx actual size
When we first arrived in Korea we stayed in
Incheon for a few days. Ivan's boss put us
in a "love motel"...but, we didn't really know
what these hotels were about until later.
This is the view from the window and my
very first sight of Korea in daytime.

"View From the Ferry" (left)
highrises in purples and greens
unframed
watercolour and graphite
shown approx actual size
Ivan and I went for a ferry ride when we
lived in Busan, Korea. There were massive
clusters of skyhigh highrises in every bay
that we passed. These buildings made a
huge impression on me.
