The Verge was created using spray paint, acrylic ink, waterproof ink, oil pastel, and polyurethane on canvas board.  Comes framed without glass.

The Story:

The Verge took its inspiration from A Study in Purple.  While I loved the way that turned out, it took eons to dry.  I wanted to create something similar, but with less dimension.

I started by spray painting a canvas board with several colors of purple spray paint. It’s important to overspray so that it stays wet and fluid.  Using a can of compressed air, I moved the paint slightly.  I knew I was going to add to it so I didn’t want to move the paint too much yet. To add some contrast I sprayed some thin lines of black spray paint.

Next I added in the teal colored acrylic ink.  It has a shiny metallic finish.  I also added in some regular purple ink.  Using the compressed air can, I moved the inks around.  This created the spidery patterns as well as the splashier patterns.

Lastly, I used a cheese grater (not one I use for food) and grated some purple oil pastels in various areas.  This added some additional interest in the form of flecks in the lavender areas.  The piece was finished with a high polyurethane to protect the pastels.
