This piece is currently on exhibition at Artomatic 2017 in Crystal City, Virginia until May 7, 2017.
Frustration is an abstract painting born, as the title suggests, out of my frustration. I created this right after a yet-to-be-titled flow painting that didn’t seem like it would dry very well. That piece was the first I had created in a while. I was feeling stuck creatively. During a small renovation of my studio I found this small canvas which had been tucked away & forgotten. I grabbed some dark colors & threw layer after layer of paint down. I combed (with an actual hair comb), sponge painted it, dripped paint on it…damn near every abstract technique that only involved paint & a bit of ink really.
I finally took a spatula and smoothed it vertically. The comb was also pushed along the canvas periodically to add some more streaks. I was still frustrated with the way it looked so I turned it horizontally & dripped white paint down the side in various areas. The paint had been thinned considerably with water so it flowed well. By turning the canvas periodically, I created a grid structure. I accented the white lines with black paint to create depth.
When it finally dried I realized I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. I still felt stuck creatively, that sort of thing comes & goes. At least this time I created something I liked in the process.
