The Story:

Breeze in Winter is a minimalist abstract painting I made right before Artomatic 2015.  I had taken a long hiatus from creating art and wanted to start fresh with some simple pieces.  Frequently when I work with painter’s caulk, I do so with the intention of leaving the piece white.  The last few paintings I had done in the medium I added colorants to it.  For this one, I decided to return to the all-white aesthetic.

After coating the canvas in caulk, I gently scrape my smoothing tool over the surface creating a texture I like.  Before the caulk  dried, I set the glass pieces into place.  After the piece fully dried, I decided I really wanted the caulk to have a much brighter, glossy white.  To achieve that, I used a high gloss white acrylic paint.  When that dried I went over the painting with a high gloss acrylic varnish to seal it.

I often create swirls in my paintings so that design just came rather naturally.  The hard part was finding glass pieces that had similar swirl patterns in them.  I chose the pieces & laid them out long before I started laying down the caulk.  On a piece like this, the caulk is spread fairly thin so it cures quickly.  That doesn’t leave enough time for spontaneous designing.

The painting is wired and ready to hang. The glass pieces do add a bit of weight but nothing that would need special hanging requirements. SaveSave
