The Story:

Silver Abstracted is an abstract painting that began as an experiment.  In the past I have done all kinds of things with painter’s caulk:  mixed it with ink, mixed it with acrylic paint, painted over it with ink, painted over it with acrylic paint, even just left it bare.  What I didn’t know was how well it would take spray paint.

Over the years I have amassed quite a collection of spray paint.  Nothing fancy or expensive, just the stuff you get at Home Depot.  Among my collection was some metallic spray paints, including the silver I used on this piece.

I remember browsing around Pinterest and seeing a bunch of abstract art that was, most likely, made using expensive texturizing medium painted with metallic paints.  Given my goal is to make art as inexpensive as I can, I thought I’d give it a try with my favorite medium: painter’s caulk.  Caulk is a great, inexpensive medium to work with and I learned in a class that chemically it’s almost identical to the expensive mediums in art supply stores.

After putting the caulk on in a really abstract (one might even say ‘haphazard’) way, I let it cure, then spray painted it outside.  After the spray paint dried, I added touches of a darker silver acrylic paint in some of the deep pits.  It’s a bit hard to see in the picture.

It’s a simple piece of course.  I like making simple pieces that add a bit of uniqueness to anyone’s decor without breaking the bank.
