More About This Painting:

My Unicorn Life is a pastel colored abstract painting that was a bonus of sorts.  I was tasked with recreating an old piece similar to this one.  I always over mix my paints.  This time I really went overboard and ended up with enough paint to make a second piece of the same size!

The technique behind this painting is simple. Using a plain white painter’s caulk, I carefully mixed in artist’s inks until I saw correct colors. Once mixed, I dab the mixture on the canvas board randomly until I think I have enough of it placed to cover.  Then it’s a matter of taking a putty knife or spatula over the paint with enough force to cover the exposed areas.  The trick is to get it done with as few strokes as possible. If you go over a section too many times the paint mixes too much & you end up with a lot of brown.

The title of the piece has a small story to it.  I spend a lot of time learning about social media. Hashtags play an important role in helping your art get found on places like Instagram & Twitter. In doing research into Instagram specifically, I came across a suggestion to use #MyUnicornLife. I was a bit mystified by the tag. It turns out that it’s used to represent anything featuring a rainbow array of colors:  hair, food, clothes, and of course, art!  This painting is kind of the embodiment of that hashtag so I chose it to be the title.  SaveSave
