A Simple Pear II was created using polymer clay, acrylic paint, and acrylic varnish on canvas board.

The Story:

A Simple Pear II was created after the original version sold.  Before I was able to mark the original copy as sold I received a second inquiry on it.  Rather than  informing the second client only that A Simple Pear had sold, I offered to make a replica.

It had been 2 years since I had created the original piece.  I no longer remembered which color of polymer clay I used as a base – much less which colors of paint I had used.  Rather than try to come up with an exact replica, I used the original piece more as inspiration.

In the end, this piece is significantly more vibrant than the original.  It’s also a bit larger, which was unintentional.  By using a darker polymer clay and painting over it with a lighter color, I created a bit more depth to the piece.  I sealed this one with a matte finish acrylic varnish but it still added a glossy sheen.  That extra gloss really brought out the texture I ‘hammered’ into the clay more than I thought it would.  While I was (and am) annoyed that the matte finish was glossy, the result better than expected.

I was very nervous that the client might night like the deviation in color.  Even though I worked from a photograph of the original, I didn’t quite pick up on just how much more vibrant the new piece was.  When I arrived at the show where the first was hanging to compare, my heart sank.  I thought for sure it was just too different from the original to sell.  I was thrilled when the client remarked that she really liked the brighter colors more than the muted coloring of the original.  She went home happy and I went home relieved that it was well received – and a bit proud that I went against the grain of the art world and replicated my work (something seriously frowned upon).  It’s something that I ended up doing for another piece in that same show.
