Club Muertos was created using beads, acrylic paint, and glitter paint mounted on a mini canvas
I’m writing this story in 2016, the piece was created in 2013 so I’ll do my best to remember.
Club Muertos was created because of a error in ordering the mini canvases. Normally I order 2″ x 3″ canvases. I don’t remember where I got these but when I was putting them away I noticed they were 2.5″ x 3.5″ The extra half inch in both directions threw off many of my normal designs. I had to think a bit differently about these slightly larger pieces.
This was the first piece I created with the larger mini canvases (at least as far as I remember). I had purchase a few strands of those colored skull beads. I think they are carved from stone & dyed as they are much heavier than plastic or acrylic. I played with several designs when I finally settled on a vertical design. Rather than paint the whole canvas a glittery silver, I decided just to accent the skulls. I painted the sides black. I used the silver beads not only to made the outsides less empty but also to tie into the silver in the middle.
I still think those little beads have a Dia de los Muertos look to the design although I don’t really know why. I think I originally tried using them on one of the larger skulls but could never made them work.
