Two was created using polymer clay, metal embellishments, acrylic paint, and acrylic glaze mounted on a mini canvas. A hanging device is attached to the canvas so this can be hung like normal artwork.
I’m writing this story in 2016, the piece was created in 2011 so I’ll do my best to remember.
Two was and is an anomaly. I created the rose without having any notion of exactly what I was going to do with it. I think I just wanted to see how well I could sculpt a rose as it had been a really long time since I attempted one. After I baked the clay, I decided not to apply the acrylic varnish to the entire piece. I just applied it to the edges of the petals to give them a bit of dimension. That’s basically when I realized I had nothing planned for it.
The rose sat in my studio along with another one for a long time. A gallery I did business with had a show called “Baby Canvases” every year. I realized that the rose would fit perfectly onto one. It looked really empty on the canvas by itself though. I had those two silver metal embellishments left over from one of my Day of the Dead skulls. Since they fit quite well, I decided to attach them.
It’s been 5 years since I created this piece. Something about it has never sat right though. I really don’t like the silver pieces – or maybe it’s the black background. Either way, I’m really thinking of tearing this apart and changing some things. I’m leaving it up for sale until I do. Each time I think it’s time to change / alter a piece, that’s usually when it sells (seriously).
