Size: 16″ x 20″
Vintage was made from baker’s twine, all-purpose twine, burlap ribbon, a wooden pendant and beads, all mounted on canvas.
Vintage was inspired by a very tiny piece I did some years ago called Woven. Woven measured only 2″ x 3″ so it was pretty easy to do. I really liked the look of it so I decided to try and make something on a larger scale.
This piece has a standard 16″ x 20″ canvas as a base. I painted it beige. Then I began to wrap the twine around it. The picture does not deceive, there are two different colors of twine separated by the large ribbon. The ribbon was always supposed to be on the piece. The two colors of twine were not. I ran out the light-colored twine a lot quicker than I anticipated. After going to several different stores, I realized I couldn’t find the exact color of twine. I went with the slight variation instead. Since I knew I was going to use the wide burlap-type ribbon, I knew the two colors wouldn’t be a huge issue. I think it adds to the piece.
The wooden flower pendant in the middle was a happy accident. I bought that over 10 years ago with the intention of making a necklace. Clearly I never did – which turned out for the best! Rather than just mount the pendant directly, I decided to ring it with darker burlap loops. Since the rose is a pendant, I tied a bit more twine with some beads onto it. The sides of the piece were finished with a two-tone burlap ribbon.
This piece started be down the path to doing many others like it. There is something very quieting about doing this sort of work. You have to focus more than you’d think so it keeps the mind quiet. Personally, being able to shut off my head now and then is a godsend.
